Heatons Post – May 2023

For World Parkinson’s Day on 11th April, I visited a parliamentary event hosted by Parkinson’s UK and questioned the Government in Parliament about the inadequate care being provided to people with Parkinson’s. 

Parkinson’s is the fastest growing neurological condition in the world and the Government is failing to ensure that NHS services can meet this growing demand. People with Parkinson’s face huge waiting times for diagnosis, mental health support, check-ups and medication reviews. Less than half of people with Parkinson’s are able to access an occupational therapist or speech and language therapist, who are all essential members of a Parkinson’s support team.

The cost-of-living crisis is continuing to put huge pressure on families up and down the UK and food bank usage is at an all time high. I recently visited Chelwood Food Bank and would like to thank all of the staff and volunteers who provide this vital support service in our community. They are currently short on coffee, tea bags, jam, biscuits, crisps and small packs of basmati rice. If you are able to, please donate.

It was great to be able to meet up with two Stockport organisations in the House of Commons this month. Thank you to the Stockport Normandy Group – a veteran’s association established here in Stockport in 1988 – for meeting with me. I am grateful to all veterans and serving personnel for their invaluable contributions to our country.
