Thank you, Stockport!
I am deeply humbled and profoundly grateful to have been re-elected as the Labour Member of Parliament for Stockport, with an increased majority of 15,270.
To every voter who cast their ballot for me and to every local Labour Party member who came out to support my campaign, thank you from the bottom of my heart. It is people like you who are the backbone of the Labour Party and any success we may achieve.
With Labour winning the General Election and forming a new government, we are on the brink of real change for Britain and for Stockport. I am excited to continue working on behalf of our brilliant communities, to implement Labour’s vision of a fairer, more just society.
This vision, set out in Labour’s manifesto for change, is committed to policies that will improve people’s lives. I have been vocal about the devastating impact of the housing crisis on Stockport and the country at large, and consistently called for the building of more affordable and social housing as a matter of priority. I am proud to have been elected on a manifesto that is committed to undertaking important planning reforms to unleash a programme of housebuilding, providing 1.5 million new affordable homes within the next Parliament. We will also deliver justice for private renters by enshrining vital rights and protections, including a swift end to Section 21 no-fault evictions.
We will bring the railways into public ownership as existing contracts expire, leading to a unified system focused on delivering reliable, affordable, and high-quality services. This will put an end to the chaos and waste of privatisation which has brought rail services and stations in Stockport into a state of decline disrepair. The new arms-length body, Great British Railways, will be led by rail professionals and industry experts and be responsible for the day-to-day operational delivery of the railways.
Our ‘Labour’s Plan to Make Work Pay: Delivering a New Deal for Working People’ will provide the biggest boost to workers’ rights in a generation. This includes banning exploitative zero-hours contracts, ending fire and rehire practices, and introducing basic rights from day one, such as parental leave, sick pay and protection from unfair dismissal.
These are just a few of Labour’s plans to rebuild our country. You can read the full manifesto here.
As your MP, I will do everything I can to serve everyone in our community and repay the trust you have placed in me. I am committed to fighting for a better future for all of Stockport’s residents, whether you voted Labour or not.
