Debenhams and Our High Street

Solidarity with those staff and supply chain workers at Debenhams who have lost their jobs as the retailer closes all its stores tomorrow.

The closure of Debenhams is a tragedy and as we emerge from the pandemic, and the economy reopens, the Government must provide targeted support to high street retailers to keep them afloat.

USDAW, the trade union for shop workers, has long campaigned to save our shops by calling for an extension to the current business rates holiday to at least the end of the year, the introduction of an online sales levy set at 1% and an extension of the moratorium on shop evictions for rent arrears.

The Government must listen to workers in the sector and provide urgently needed support.

To all those who worked in the store in Stockport town centre, I wanted to say thank you to all of you, including the staff, contractors and suppliers, who built the brand over the years in Stockport and across the nation as the local store closed on May 8th.

If you are a Stockport constituent, have lost your job at Debenhams and need some assistance, please do contact my office at navendu.mishra.mp@parliament.uk.
