Debt Awareness Week 2021

This week is Debt Awareness Week, a week to destigmatise debt. Anyone can fall into debt for a variety of reasons and many people can feel uncomfortable talking about their feelings and worries related to their finances.

Debt Awareness Week is held to show that no one is alone. There are multiple services that can help with debt itself, or the stress caused by debt. For those struggling, StepChange debt charity provides a confidential online service to help you understand what to do next, what form of support and guidance you could receive and how you can start to take control of your money. The National Debt Line also provides a free impartial service at 0808 808 4000 and Samaritans provide emotional support on 116 123.

Locally, Stockport Credit Union aims to help residents take control of their money by encouraging residents to save where possible and borrow only what you can afford to repay. It is a community organisation run by and for its members that only operates locally. They provide a variety of services, including Payroll Loans (loans locked into your wages so you pay as you earn directly from your wage) and other forms of loans for people that may struggle to get credit from high street banks.

This Debt Awareness Week, please reach out if you know someone who is struggling and put them in touch with the above services.
