End of Life - Terminally Ill Adults Bill

As always, I am grateful to constituents from Stockport who have corresponded with me regarding the landmark legislation (End of Life - Terminally Ill Adults Bill) as it progresses through the House of Commons. This correspondence has been both in support of and against the Bill.

These messages have almost always included deeply personal, emotional stories, and I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to share their experiences with me. I fully recognise the depth and strength of feelings on this important issue.

Following today’s consideration of amendments, the Bill will progress through its remaining stages. At all stages of this process, my decisions have been rooted in a belief around individual freedom; I believe that everyone should have the right to dignity and personal choice at the end of life and I support this Bill’s progression. I welcome the safeguards and oversight introduced to the Bill during committee stage, which aim to ensure that decisions are made freely, safely, and with dignity.

I understand that not everyone will agree with this position and some will be greatly disappointed. Please be assured I wholeheartedly respect the views on both sides of this highly sensitive issue.

I will continue to listen and engage with constituents and monitor the Bill closely as it continues to progress through Report Stage and onto the Third Reading. I believe it is also vital that this legislation does not undermine the importance of high-quality palliative care, which must remain accessible to all, alongside real investment in our NHS.
