Heatons Post Column – February 2023

Legislation brought forward to try and limit the ability of certain public sector workers to take industrial action is akin to a sacking nurses bill. As workers across sectors take unprecedented industrial action, the government is trying to curb their right to strike in a flagrant undermining of democracy and international conventions. Instead of getting round the negotiating table, they are prolonging industrial action. I recently raised this in Prime Minister’s Questions, where I asked why the Prime Minister rammed through this legislation when his Transport Secretary thinks it’s unworkable and his Education Secretary doesn’t want it. 

Samaritans recently marked Brew Monday, an initiative to try and get people to have a cup of tea on the day that is frequently described as the most difficult day of the year. Stockport Samaritans were out that morning at Stockport station talking to people. The work they do supporting people who are suffering with mental health problems is so important. I am grateful that we have active volunteers here in Stockport, who meet at the Heatons Centre. If you are struggling, you can contact the Samaritans for free on 116 123. 

Since I was elected in 2019, I have been pushing for rail stations across Stockport constituency to be made truly accessible. This includes lobbying for step-free access at Heaton Chapel train station, which I recently raised in a Written Parliamentary Question. I will continue to put pressure on the government to release proper funding so that no one is prevented from using rail because of its inaccessibility.
