Navendu’s column in the Heatons Post.

After the sad passing of Her Majesty the Queen, we saw people across Stockport, the UK and the world come together to celebrate her life and achievements. Whether it was by signing the book of condolence at Stockport Town Hall or paying respect as she was lying in state in Westminster Hall, our communities are remembering the life of Her Majesty fondly.

Earlier in the month, I secured an Urgent Question in the House of Commons about the future of Avanti West Coast rail services. I have been contacted by numerous constituents and businesses who have shared with me the impact the reduction in service is having on their day-to-day lives. I was therefore disappointed that the new Secretary of State for Transport failed to turn up to be held to account by Members of Parliament.

As cleaners, guards, drivers and other rail staff work hard to provide a good service, the company and its management continuously let the public down. This is something I will continue to monitor closely and raise with the Government. Avanti must be stripped of the franchise and the service must be brought back into public ownership. Rail and bus services should be run in the interests of the public, not private profit.

I am deeply concerned by the ever-increasing cost of living and as the winter approaches, the Government has to step in to provide support to families, individuals and businesses who are struggling. I hope the new Prime Minister understands the severity of the situation and acts accordingly. Energy bills must be frozen and wages desperately need to rise.

If you live or work in my Stockport constituency and require support on any issue please do not hesitate to contact me by emailing navendu.mishra.mp@parliament.uk.
