Heatons Post – July 2023

The Conservative Government has consistently failed renters – by refusing to address the housing crisis and to enact regulations to give renters security. The result for many is poor quality housing, increasingly unaffordable rents, and the ever-present threat of homelessness due to no fault evictions. I was glad to be able to raise these pressing issues in a recent House of Commons debate.

 I am grateful to all carers in Stockport and across Britain for all they do. I was able to attend an event in the Commons during Carers Week, an important campaign to recognise the vital contribution made by people who provide unpaid care and the support they require.

I have written to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions to ask what support his Department is providing to unpaid carers in Stockport during the cost of living crisis. I also wrote to the Department of Health and Social Care to hold the government to account over its decision to halve pledged investment into social care, and the impact this will inevitably have on unpaid carers.

More broadly, I will continue to challenge the Conservative Government for creating a crisis in adult social care. Our population is ageing and care demands are rising. Alarmingly, funding for adult social care has fallen sharply since 2010. It is unpaid carers who have been expected to fill the resulting care vacuum.

Back in Stockport, it was great to be able to go to the Heatons Open Gardens on Sunday 18th June. I thank the organisers of this event, the proceeds of which are going to charity, and everyone who opened their garden to the community. It was great to see such a fantastic attendance.
