My August column in the Stockport Express
Parliament has been in summer recess since the end of July and will return on 2nd September. Recess enables MPs to spend more time in our constituencies, meeting constituents and organisations in our community, an opportunity I am grateful for.
I would like to congratulate all students in Stockport who received their GCSE, A-level and T-level results this August. The exam period and wait for results day is always a nerve-wracking time, so if you’ve just received your results, be proud of getting through and of all you have achieved. There are many paths open to you, with a wide range of fantastic opportunities for further education, training and employment here in Stockport. I also want to pay tribute to all the teachers and school staff in Stockport who support our students to achieve their best in their exams and provide them with vital guidance during this important transitionary period.
I recently wrote a letter to CrossCountry trains to raise my concerns about their decision to reduce their services, including those in Stockport. CrossCountry is already one of the worst performing rail companies in the country and passengers have been expected to accept excessive delays, cancellations and overcrowding for too long.
As I wrote in my letter, CrossCountry must take urgent action to improve their services. I echo the sentiments of the Transport Secretary, who has criticised the company’s unacceptably poor performance. More widely I welcome the fact that we now have a government willing to hold failing private rail companies accountable, with a view to bringing rail back into public ownership, where it has always belonged.
With the 2024 Paris Olympics drawing to a close this month, I congratulate Aimee Pratt – nicknamed the Reddish Rocket – for competing in the women's 3,000–meter steeplechase. I am sure Aimee has a bright future ahead and will continue to do Stockport proud!
