Stockport Council re-opens taxi fare consultation

Taxi in Stockport.

After campaigning for the re-opening of Stockport Council’s consultation on a fare increase for taxis, Taxi Association SK (TASK) have succeeded and the council have confirmed that the consultation will be re-run.

I was made aware that several local taxi drivers felt that the rate increase proposed by the former consultation was unfair and that the council had failed to consult TASK, who represent Hackney Carriage drivers. I am therefore pleased that a process is being undertaken to formally recognise TASK as a trade association.

As the cost of living crisis deepens, increased bills will only hit those in precarious work the hardest, with the uncertainty of their take-home pay only set to increase financial anxiety. Only two years ago through the pandemic, many operators reported to the GMB trade union an 80% drop in bookings month on month. We must ensure drivers and their livelihoods are protected and this vital sector is supported.

I am therefore pleased that we have been able to work together to re-open this consultation and glad that the broadest view of drivers across our borough will be taken into account when the consultation re-opens.

Transport workers – whether that be in taxis, buses or on trains – go above and beyond for the public and we should all be grateful for their work.
